BIOGRAPHICAL PROFILE
Alfred Hitchcock KBE

A highly influential British,American filmmaker and producer, who pioneered many techniques in the suspense and psychological thriller genres.

After a very substantial career in his native United Kingdom in both silent films and talkies, Hitchcock moved to Hollywood and, in 1956, became an American citizen, also retaining his British citizenship.

Hitchcock directed more than fifty feature films, in a career spanning six decades, from the silent era, through the invention of sound films, and far into the color era.

Hitchcock became famous for his expert and largely unrivalled control of pace and suspense, and his films draw heavily on both fear and fantasy.

Hitchcock began his directing career in the United Kingdom in 1922.

Rebecca was the only one of Hitchcock’s films to win the Academy Award for Best Picture though the award did not go to Hitchcock, although four other films were also nominated.

In 1967 he was awarded the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award for lifetime achievement.

Films include

‘Notorious’ – 1946 – ‘To Catch A Thief’ – 1955 – ‘The Birds’ – 1963
‘Psycho’ – 1960.

Many of Hitchcock’s films contain cameo appearances by Hitchcock himself: the director would be seen for a brief moment boarding a bus, crossing in front of a building, standing in an apartment across the courtyard, or appearing in a photograph.

He is also remebered for his television show “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” from 1955 to 1965 which he hosted.

Hitchcock died from renal failure in his Bel-Air, Los Angeles, California home at the age of 80.
