BIOGRAPHICAL PROFILE

Clem “Paddy” McCartney

Paddy was born in Belfast, Ireland.
Paddy was and still is second lead singer to Glenn Shorrock. Paddy had a great voice and a hell of nice chap. Somehow he seemingly gave the lead parts to Glenn which was probably for the better as in reality “The Twilights” were Glenn’s baby.

As one reads about the band it is sad that they never reached the success world wide as they deserved every bit of international success then and there. One can see Glenn Shorrock certainly did. After winning the 1966 Hoadley’s Battle of the at Festival Hall, Melbourne, The Twilights competed in the first national final and won.

The competition rule which set maximum group membership at five meant that “Paddy McCartney” half of the band’s twin lead vocal line-up had to sit out for the band’s winning performance, but he returned to the stage for the winner’s encore.

The competition first prize was a trip to the UK on the Sitmar cruise line and on 26 September 1966, the group embarked for London on the passenger liner ‘Fairstar’.

Paddy McCartney, Mike Sykes and Glenn Shorrock had been singing in a quartet called The Checkmates but had decided to trim down to a more efficient trio.

Looking into the future, Glenn suggested they call themselves The Twilights.
With the then Adelaide Beatle craze and The Twilights rode the wave at an early stage. From being just part of a vocal trio, The Twilights reorganised into a complete rock ‘n’ roll band.

This meant losing Mike Sykes. Then came lead guitarist Terry Britten, bassist John Bywaters, rhythm guitarist Peter Brideoake and drummer Frank Barnard. Soon Laurie Pryor joined. The “Twilight highlight” of 1967 was undoubtedly the band’s trip to England, part of their prize for winning the 1966 Battle Of The Sounds competition.

The remaining ex-Twilight, Paddy McCartney has only jsut joined a reunion of the Twilights over the last few years.
