Dodo Marmarosa

An American pianist.

The Pittsburgh born child prodogy trained as as a classical pianist but would later move to jazz practicing with his school friend Erroll Garner, he also came from Pittsburgh.

His career began in 1941 joining Johnny “Scat” Davis Orchestra at the young age of 15.

He then joined Gene Krupa and then Charlie Barnet’s band meeting Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker.

In the mid forties he played with Tommy Dorsey’s Orchestra and again moved to Artie Shaw’s band.

Other top line players were with Gene Amons in 1961 with recording sessions.

Marmarosa is considered one of the best pianist of his time.

At the time of his death, Marmarosa resided at the VA Medical Center in Lincoln-Lemington-Belmar, Pittsburgh, occasionally playing piano and organ for residents.

He died in 2002 in Pittsburgh.
