SONG PROFILE

“Lady Godiva”

The somg was recorded by Peter and Gordon, a British duo and formed by Peter Asher and Gordon Waller, who rocketed to fame in 1964, with “A World Without Love” and had several subsequent hits as above in that era.

In August, 2005, Peter and Gordon reunited onstage for the first time in more than 30 years, as part of two tribute concerts for Mike Smith of the Dave Clark Five in New York City.

The song is a music-hall style number which frivolously references the legend of Lady Godiva, reimagining the legend in the modern day: a director from Hollywood witnesses her legendary ride (with “her long blonde hair” obscuring her breasts and other private parts) and recruits the lady to star in his films, but he turns out to be a director of pornographic films.

Waller died on July 17, 2009, at the age of 64.
