Following the successful chart performances of previous singles “The Boy Is Mine” with Brandy,” the song was released on July 7, 1998 as the album’s second single. “The First Night” became one of Monica’s biggest successes in years, topping both U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart, becoming Monica’s first chart solo topper.
